San Mateo, CA dermatologist describes how Fraxel treatment will benefit you
San Mateo, CA area patients interested in improving their skin’s appearance and health may feel overwhelmed at the many choices available to them. With so many treatments that are used for skin enhancement, patients are unsure as to which one is best for them. Our dermatologists at Allure Skin and Laser Center, including Drs. Bruce Maltz, Carie Chui, and Meghan Hession, are here to help. Our team members may recommend Fraxel treatment for a variety of skin issues, as it can provide amazing results. It says RECOMMEND – It does NOT say provides. Huge difference in the meaning of the words
How does Fraxel treatment benefit you?
Many of our patients who hear of Fraxel treatment are interested in learning more about this procedure. Fraxel is a laser treatment used in our office to provide maximum rejuvenation. The laser light penetrates deep into the skin to stimulate the production of newer, firmer tissues. It smooths imperfections, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and allows patients to enjoy a more youthful appearance after just one treatment. Additionally, Fraxel treatment reduces the appearance of acne scarring and lessens the visibility of pigmentation issues such as age spots and sunspots.
What to expect during a Fraxel treatment
Change was made where highlighted below
Once patients have had a consultation with their dermatologist, they can discuss the procedure. Fraxel treatments may cause some mild discomfort, so our registered nurse or physician’s assistant will apply a topical numbing cream approximately 45 minutes before the treatment. For patients who have a lesser pain tolerance than others, an anesthetic nerve block can also be administered. Patients relax in the treatment chair while the device is used against the skin. Many patients say they experience a prickling sensation and warmth. This is well-tolerated by our patients. After the treatment, the skin may look swollen and red, and this is completely normal. This may last a few days to up to a week but can be easily disguised with cosmetics, so patients can return to work and other normal activities. The treatment may take approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the area of the body or face being treated.
Will I need to take time off work for Fraxel treatments?
Most patients can return to work after a day or two as the skin needs some time to heal. During the healing process, the skin may appear less than perfect. Women often use cosmetics to conceal the redness during this time, though swelling may occur. Many of our patients who undergo these treatments will schedule them for Friday, so they can heal over the weekend before returning to work and other social activities.

How fast will I see results?
Patients find that they will see noticeable changes happen gradually over time. Most patients will have approximately four treatments spaced weeks apart and will see improvements within a few months. By the end of the treatments, patients will have results that can last a year or longer. This is due to the skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin, as well as new skin cells, which offer a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.
Who is a candidate for Fraxel treatment?
Most patients with mild to moderate imperfections of the skin may improve their appearance with Fraxel laser treatments. If patients are seeking a milder solution, our team may encourage patients to consider IPL services. These are treatments that are performed with “intense pulsed light” to smooth skin and help it look more radiant. Treatments such as Clear + Brilliant® may be better for these individuals.
What results can be expected from routine Fraxel treatments?
Patients who undergo treatment with Fraxel may notice the following improvements in their skin:
- Smoother and fresher looking appearance
- Improved texture and tone
- Reduction of pigmentation spots
- Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduction of acne scarring
